How much does VHS to DVD transfer cost?
The cost to transfer VHS to DVD varies a lot between suppliers. Most businesses charge customers based on the duration of the tape, so for example, they charge a set amount for the first 60 mins & then they charge additional amounts for every extra 30 minutes. We think this is crazy. Most people forget what is on each tape & are not aware of how long it is. How would you budget for something like that?
Our customers know upfront how much their transfer will cost because we charge per tape. This means your tapes can be 1 hour long or 6 hours long & to digitise it, costs the same low price.
To transfer it to DVD, we use premium discs that can comfortably hold up to 4 hours & we charge an extra $10.
Where can I bring my VHS tapes to be converted to DVD or USB?
Customers travel from all over Sydney to drop off their old video and camera tapes to us. We also have many customers from around the country post their orders. We have a purpose-built digital studio in Elderslie which is South West Sydney. You can drop in anytime during the working week between 9am and 5pm.

How can I convert a VHS to DVD at home for free?
In our experience, if there are more than 3 or 4 tapes, most people don’t have the time or the patience to convert their own VHS to DVD. If you don’t know what your are doing, the end result can look much worse than the VHS. We recommend sending in your tapes & at least letting us digitise them for you.
Once they are digitised, we can then send them back and you can make your own DVD’s, saving you some extra money?

You will need to have a VCR player but if you can’t find one, try ebay. With a recent surge in sales of VHS machines as reported by Benedict Brook of the the dailytelegraph, you might be looking at prices of $150-$300 for a used machine. If you are looking for blank DVD’s, try officeworks or dicksmith, where you can also buy a DVD burner.
What is the best VHS to digital converter?
Many people attempt to digitise tapes themselves. This can be a cost-effective way to transfer your tape library…but is it the best?
In a recent exercise, we took a VHS tape from 2007 & the standard equipment that a homeowner may have, a VCR & a laptop/pc & then we put the same tape through our professional equipment to compare it.
As you can see from the video below, the colour is much darker and loses a lot of detail.
The vertical shift up and down is caused by the VCR.
The auto-tracking feature could not assist & attempts to manually adjust the tracking also failed.
The laptop it was captured on could not handle the captured data rates and dropped frames. This made the comparison fall out of sync with each other as you can see & means that over the duration of the tape, many frames would be missed.
