How do I convert old tapes to digital?
That’s a great question! There are 2 ways which you can convert tapes to digital & which one you choose will all depend on what’s important to you.

- VCR,
- a digital device that converts an analogue signal to a digital one &
- a computer.
If you have plenty of time on your hands, this is a great way to convert tapes to digital files. Just remember that it is a real-time process. That means that if your tape is 6 hours long, it will take 6 hours to capture. And if you have lots of tapes, well, that is going to take a lot of time & hard drive space to capture.
A lot of people set up the capture with the wrong settings so that when the capture is finished, the file looks like one of those early first internet videos. You know the ones… they had little squares all over it & it made the video really blurry. Each software program converts tapes to digital differently, so just make sure you check it carefully. How much does it cost to digitize a tape?
Our regular price to convert tapes to digital is $33, but right now our special price is only $20 +gst. It doesn’t matter if your tape is 1 hour long or 6 hours long, the same low price applies. This way, you know exactly how much you are going to pay to digitize a tape.
Converting old tapes to digital
You may be aware, that technology like the video or camera tape, has a life expectancy of around 20-30 years, if looked after properly (I wish we had of known that 30 years ago!). Each year, as the tape gets older, the magnetic particles found on the tape become less magnetic. This ultimately degrades the picture and the audio & you are left with images filled with static & white noise & there is nothing that we can do to reverse it.
It becomes the tape owner’s responsibility to find a way to convert the tapes to digital files & stop the decaying process.
